1 Introduction
1.1 TheDataCiteConsortium
Scholarlyresearchisproducingeverincreasingamountsofdigitalresearchdata,anditdependson
datatoverifyresearchfindings,createnewresearch,andsharefindings.Inthiscontext,whathas
beenmissinguntilrecently,isapersistentapproachtoaccess,identification,sharing,andreuseof
datasets.Toaddressthisneed,theDataCite

internationalconsortiumwasfoundedinlate2009with
thesethreefundamentalgoals:
establisheasieraccesstoscientificresearchdataontheInternet,
increaseacceptanceofresearchdata aslegitimate,citablecontributionstothescientific
record,and
supportdataarchivingthatwillpermitresultstobeverifiedandrepurposedforfuture
study.
Sinceitsfoundingin2009,DataCitehasgrownandnowspanstheglobefromEuropeandNorth
AmericatoAsiaandAustralia.TheaimofDataCiteistoprovide domainagnosticservicestobenefit
scholarsinawiderangeofdisciplines.
KeytotheDataCiteserviceisth
econceptofalongtermorpersistentidentifier.Apersistent
identifierisanassociationbetweenacharacterstringandaresource.Resourcescanbefiles,parts of
files,persons,organizations,abstractions,etc.DataCiteusesDigitalObjectIdentifiers(DOIs
)

atthe
presenttimeandisconsideringtheuseofotheridentifierschemesinthefuture.Forthisreason,the
MetadataSchemahasbeendesignedwithflexibilityandextensibilityinmind.
1.2 DataCiteCommunityParticipation
TheMetadataWorkingGroupwouldliketoacknowledgethecontributionstoourworkofmany
colleaguesinourinstitutionswhoprovidedassistanceofallkinds.Theirhelphasbeengreatly
appreciated.Inaddition,weareindebtedtonumerousindividuals andorganizationsinthebroader
scholarlycommunitywhohavetakenaninterestinthiswork.Becausedatacit
ationanddata
managementareevolvingareasofconcern,welookforwardtocontinuedinterest.Withthisinmind,
theWorkingGroupprovidesaninteractivediscussionforumforDataCitemembersandclientsto
discusstheDataCiteMetadataSchemaandissuesconnectedwithmetadatasubmittedtoDataCite,
asappropriate

1.3 TheMetadataSchema
TheDataCiteMetadataSchemaisalistofcoremetadataproperties chosenfortheaccurateand
consistentidentificationofaresourceforcitationandretrievalpurposes,alongwithrecommended
useinstructions.Theresourcethatisbeingidentifi ed canbeofanykind,butitistypicallyadataset.
Weusetheterm‘dataset’init
sbroadestsense.Wemeanittoincludenotonlynumericaldata,but
anyotherresearchdataoutputs.Themetadataschemapropertiesarepresentedanddescribedin
detailinSection2
.

2.1 Overview
ThepropertiesoftheDataCiteMetadataSchemaarepresentedinthissection. Moredetailed
descriptionsoftheproperties,andtheirrelatedsubproperties,areprovidedinSections2.3
.
Therearethreedifferentlevelsofobligationforthemetadataproperties:
Mandatory(M)propertiesmustbeprovided,
Recommended(R)propertiesareoptional,butstronglyrecommended and
Optional(O)propertiesareoptionalandprovidericherdescription.
Thoseclientswhowishtoenhancetheprospectsthattheirmetadatawillbefound,citedand
linkedtooriginalresearcharestronglyencouragedtos
ubmittheRecommendedaswellas
Mandatorysetofproperties.Together,theMandatoryandRecommendedsetofpropertiesand
theirsubpropertiesareespeciallyvaluabletoinformationseekersandaddedserviceproviders,such
asindexers.TheMetadataWorkingGroupmembersstronglyurgetheinclusionofmetadata
identifiedasRecommendedforthepu
