Overview
This manual is to educate and serve as a
reference guide on Rescue Squad 3. This
manual provides a in depth description of the
apparatus itself and the tools carried on it. It is
merely a tool set in place to help our
membership get answers to the questions they
may have about any and everything concerning
RS3.
The Rescue Squads Job
Rescue Squad 3 provides a
multiple discipline service to the
community that many
companies can’t at a moments
notice.
Equipped with tools for many
dynamic calls, it can immediately
respond to vehicle collisions, rope
rescue, hazmat, water rescue, and
many other incidents.
We also respond to
structure fires on the
Rescue Company. The
primary job of the Rescue
Co. at fires is to find
victims. Remember, we
are the only of our kind
coming. Use your crew
wisely!
History
In 1984, Assistant fire chief David Smiley
motioned to our membership a purchase of a
set of Hurst hydraulic tools to better handle
vehicle accidents with entrapment as they were
becoming more prevalent. The membership
accepted and a hydraulic pump, a pair of
spreaders, and “O” cutters were added to Brush
3, a 1983 GMC pickup. In the early months of
1987, Bay District purchased a box truck and
labeled it Rescue 3. At this point, Rescue
Company 3 was established. In 1995 the
department took delivery of a
Spartan/Saulsbury Heavy Rescue squad which
served until January of 2015 when we took
delivery of current Rescue Squad 3.

extrication tools. Each tool serves its own
purposed and is used at different times. Tools
specializing in cutting, spreaders, and pushing.
The core tech. allows for a hot swap. This allows
our firefighters to quickly swap tools at a moments
notice without cutting the pumps off.
The lines are created so that the fluid is fed and
returned in two separate lines but protected by
the rubber outer layer.
RS3 in combination with the 2 portable pumps and
battery tool (explained on next page) can operate
13 tools at any given time.

Gas Meters
Squad 3 is equipped with (2) QRAE ll 4 gas meters. These
meters have the ability to monitor for Carbon Monoxide
C0), Oxygen (02) , Hydrogen Sulfide (H2S) , and Lower
Explosive Limit (LEL).
(1) Sensit HXG-2d Ticker. This meter is predominately used
to find a leaks origin. As you move closer to a leak, the
louder the alarm will get. It measures LEL up to 990 ppm
and then converts to percentage.
(1) Sensit TMX adjustable tick. This meter requires a bump
test prior to each use and has to be set to 1 tick per
second.
ALL METERS NEED TO BE “ZEROEDBEFORE ENTERING A
POTENTIAL IDLH. IF THIS IS NOT DONE, THE METER WILL
USE THE ATMOSPHERE IT CLEARED ITSELF IN AS THE
BASELINE.
ACTION LEVELS (Levels at which we need to change our
approach)
Oxygen- 19.5 to 23.5 (Outside of these numbers DON
SCBA)
Hydrogen Sulfide- 10 ppm (DON SCBA) 25 ppm (withdraw
and notify command)
Lower Explosive Limit- 10% (proceed with caution) 25%
(withdraw and notify command)
Carbon Monoxide- 8ppm (residential) and 25 ppm
(commercial) is the max exposure in 24 hours. If you get
readings above 25 ppm, you need to DON SCBA.

Arizona Vortex
The Arizona Vortex is the ultimate artificial high directional system
(AHD). The Vortex can be set up in multiple configurations including
tripod, bi-pod and monopod. Separately the two heads create an a-
frame, gin pole, a combination of the two, as well as a multitude of
other configurations.
We use this for many different reasons and it requires a great deal of
training and practice to understand its capabilities.

Stokes Basket w/ Bridal
RS3’s stokes basket is rigged with a bridal
known as the DC Bridal. The bridal
incorporates a 5:1 Aztec providing the
ability to lower the basket vertical. It has a
simplistic lashing system that requires the
red and blue straps to be laid over the
patient and clipped into rings. The yellow
strap pictured works with the class 2
harness in the red bag at the bottom. This
system is all that is required to lash a
patient into our stokes basket. This baskets
sole use is Rope Rescue. We do not use this
for anything else.
Water Rescue
(2) 300’ Polypropylene
life safety rope bags.
(6) Throw Bags (75 ft.)
(4) Water Survival Suits
(2) Horse Collars (Throw
Rings)
(7) Personal Flotation
Device
(2) packs of glow sticks
Often we are assisting boats on the water with trying
to locate a boat in distress and setting up for
potentially receiving a victim removed from the water.
We do not have a boat nor a raft. The equipment on
the unit should be used by certified personnel only. If
the situation presents it self that throw bags can be
put in service, have a PFD on and deploy the bags as
needed.
DO NOT WEAR STRUCTURAL FIREFIGHTING GEAR
WITHIN 10 FEET OF WATER.
Thermal Imaging Camera
Rescue Squad 3 is equipped with (2) Scott
Eagle Attack yellow series thermal imaging
cameras.
They both come with a back up battery
and allow for easier understanding of heat
visualized on the screen.
Generally speaking, anything on
the screen indicates that area is above
degrees Fahrenheit. Anything 500 degrees
is orange, and finally anything over 800
degrees is red.
One thermal imaging camera is located
behind the IPAD in the cab, and the
second is located at the end of the hallway
to the right closest to the radios.
SKED
The sked is manufactured for use in ice
rescue scenarios however in its evolution
in the fire department has been used for
multiple different disciplines. As a patient
packaging device, it has given teams an
additional device to extricate patients.
Ranging from its original purpose in ice
rescue, it also works well in R.I.T
operations, Rope Rescue, and ems calls
where dragging the patient is a better
option than carrying.
R.I.T Pack
RS3’s R.I.T pack is the latest Scott technology which has a plastic
bottom for ease of movement, reflective markings to make it
visible in a IDLH, and a Tand “BALLside for understanding
which side of the bag your operating with.
The R.I.T pack houses a 60 minute air cylinder, a set a tin snips, a
set of wire cutters, and a firefighter color coded lashing system.
The ball side- This side is your LOW PRESSURE side. This houses
your face piece that does not have nose cup. It is set up this way
in effort to make communication with your downed firefighter
easier. It also houses your UAC/RIC connection. (UAC- Universal
Air Connection)
The Tside- This side is your HIGH PRESSURE side. This houses
your quick fill high pressure line and your cylinder valve for your
60 minute bottle.
On top of the bag you have a chest style gauge used on the Scott
4.5 Air packs. It does NOT have a vibra-alert or a PASS system.
On the sides there are “O” style rings that allow you to clip tag
lines into them so that exterior crews can find you in event an
emergency occurs to you or your R.I.T crew.
PLEASE MAKE YOURSELF VERY FIMILIAR WITH THIS PIECE OF
EQUIPMENT. YOU, YOUR BROTHERS, AND THEIR FAMILIES
COUNT ON THIS TO BRING THEM HOME.

Pak Tracker
The pak tracker is designed to find a
activated PASS alarm. It measures its
strength (how close you are) in 0-99.
Furthermore it has a color coded system
which allows you to reference how close you
are.
You can scroll through the activated devices
if there is more than one by pushing the
scroll button. You must select the air pack
you are searching for by scrolling and hitting
enter or it will navigate you to the first one it
picks up.
R.I.T Basket and Rescue systems
RS3 has a basket with the R.I.T pack,
and two rope bags rigged for
firefighter rescue. The basket can be
used to package a downed firefighter.
The blue bag is used for a high point
rescue of a firefighter using a ladder
on the side of a building.
The yellow bag is used to remove a
firefighter from a below grade
environment.
Each bag is pre rigged and ready for
service.
Again, it can not be stressed enough
that you should make yourself familiar
with these tools.
Winches
15,000 lb. Warn 90 ft. w/ clutch
release attached to the front
bumper.
9,000 lb. Warn 90 ft. w/ clutch
release portable with 3 anchor
points.
The controller for the body mounted
bracket is in the drivers
compartment and the portable
controller is with the portable winch
in 1
st
compartment on officer side.
Remember always use your PPE and
never exceed the limits of the winches.
Grip Hoist
This tool is designed for moving
heavy loads in a controlled manor
either towards you or away from
you.
The grip hoist on RS3 has a 3,000
lb. rating with 30 ft. of 5/16 wire.
The wire has a 10,000 lb. min.
breaking strength and a hook at
the end for attachments.
There is a handle in the
compartment that is used to
operate the grip hoist.
As with any other tools, if the
handle is bending, you are
overloading the tool.
