About the County Portion
of Your Tax Bill
What is the millage rate?
The millage rate is the amount of property tax
charged per $1,000 of taxable property value.
(Rev. 10/23) CR202393230
For example, the County’s current millage rate for
county services is $5.6690 per $1,000 of taxable
value. For each taxable value of $100,000, a
property owner would pay $566.90 for County
services.
How is the millage rate
determined for Broward County
government services?
The Broward County Board of County
Commissioners sets the millage rate for County
services which comprise approximately 25% of
the typical tax bill. These services are provided
by the Broward County Commission and the
Constitutional Oices, which include the Sheri’s
Oice, Public Defender, State Attorney, Property
Appraiser and Supervisor of Elections.
The Countywide millage rate is 5.6690 and is
comprised of a non-voted rate of 5.5492 and a
voted rate for debt service of 0.1198.
What services are provided by
the countywide portion of your
property tax bill?
Examples of Countywide services include:
- Operate detention facilities
- Provide paratransit transportation system
- Operate transit buses
- Operate Countywide library and park systems
- Operate human service programs and
substance abuse facilities
- Provide regional ire-rescue services
- Provide Countywide criminal investigation
services
Why has the County portion of my
tax bill changed?
The County-wide millage rate for FY24 is the same
rate levied in FY23. Approximately 25% of your
property taxes go to support county government
services provided county-wide. For FY24, most
homestead properties will experience increases
of 3% based on the increase in assessed value
attributable to the “Save Our Homes” Statute.

Unfunded Mandates
Many state and federal directives require
local governments to provide services
or programs without providing the
appropriate monies or funding sources.
These directives, which are known as
unfunded mandates,” can compromise
a county or local government’s ability
to provide essential services that have
been deemed appropriate by the local
community. The Broward County Board
of County Commissioners opposes any
federal or state legislative actions that
create an additional inancial burden on
local governments, as these “unfunded
mandates” require resources that would
otherwise be used to fund local needs
and community services.

Commonly Asked Questions
The information contained in this brochure
is provided by the Broward County Board of
County Commissioners in an effort to help
property owners understand their tax bill.
What is an ad valorem tax?
Ad valorem tax is based upon the value of
the property. It is commonly referred to as
property tax.
What is a special or non-ad valorem
assessment?
A special assessment is a charge levied
on properties within a certain district to
defray part or all of the cost of providing
a certain service or improvement, such
as garbage collection or ire protection.
It is called a non-ad valorem assessment
because it is on the property tax bill but
is not based upon property value.
Why have my property taxes increased?
Your tax bill may increase for a variety of reasons.
Some of the most common reasons are:
- Loss of homestead exemption or other
change in exemption status.
- Increase in assessed property value due to
increase in market value or increase in index
tied to the Save Our Homes cap, which is 3%
for this year.
- Increase in millage rate by one or more
taxing authorities.
When are taxes due?
The tax bills are mailed every year on or before
November 1. Taxes are due by March 31 the
following year. If you pay your taxes early, you
are entitled to a discount of 4% during the
month of November, 3% during December, 2%
in January and 1% in February. Taxes become
delinquent on April 1; if taxes are not paid, a
tax certiicate will be sold on or before June 1.
