Thirteenth Sunday
in Ordinary Time
Today’s readings invite us to
join Jesus in living his profound love for
all creation—caring for the Earth, ac-
companying the sick, and reaching out
to the brokenhearted with a generosity
that matches his own. As we enter into
summer, we are invited to relax and re-
new. We ask for the grace to let the word
permeate and guide us, refreshing and
energizing our intentions to practice the
generous justice of the Lord.

The Madeleine wins Rose Award
Once again, The Madeleine rose garden has received top honors from The Portland
Rose Festival.
As far back as 2014, our Centennial
Memorial Rose Garden has been lauded by
the Royal Rosarians at their annual judging,
and 2021 is no different.
This year, we won First Place in the
Commercial/Public Agency division. On
Monday, Madeleine Facilities Manager Terry
Silva received the award in the Rose Garden
ceremony.
Thank you to Terry and the several vol-
unteers who help keep our garden beautiful!

In today’s Gospel we see how in faith, Jarius asked Jesus to heal his daughter and how
Jesus then answered his prayer. In prayer we also come to know that we are loved by God, and
in that trust we ask for healing for ourselves, our loved ones and all those who are suffering. This
week, please join he the Society of St. Vincent de Paul in praying for the healing of all those who
are ill and especially those who have no one to pray for them. .

Christ’s Healing Touch
This week we are reminded of the
healing power of Christ’s touch. Mark’s
gospel talks of the physical healings
of two women—one, the daughter of
a synagogue official, Jairus, who is
near death, and the other, an unnamed
woman “afflicted with hemorrhages for
twelve years.” When all
earthly powers had been
exhausted, both the
daughter of Jairus and
the unnamed woman
turned to Jesus for heal-
ing. By their great faith,
Christ’s very touch and
presence healed them
beyond anything hu-
manly possible.
For nearly 40 years,
my mother was in the travel industry—
organizing pilgrimages to holy sites
around the world. To my mother these
pilgrimages were not just her business—
they became a powerful healing ministry.
Throughout the years I witnessed count-
less pilgrims seeking physical healings for
their suffering. Still others were seeking
spiritual healing for themselves or their
loved ones—or emotional healing from
alcoholism, divorce, abuse and other af-
flictions. Knowing everyone’s story, my
mom was determined to take care of ev-
ery detail so that all her pilgrims were
free to pray and experience the healing
power of Christ as they traveled to these
holy sites. Her mantra was, “this is not
a tour, this is a pilgrimage,” and she
meant it! It was inspirational for me to
encounter first-hand the amazing faith
of these pilgrims and the many healing
“miracles” that transpired over the years.
Although not all pilgrims were “cured,”
all were “healed” in some way—and
their lives were forever changed. Since
her retirement from travel at age 90,
with that same zeal my mom has found
another “healing” ministry—gifting spe-
cial crucifixes to those she feels might
benefit from them. These crucifixes are
made in Italy, blessed in Medjugorje
(Bosnia-Hercegovina), and shipped from
Ireland. I often tell her that although she
can no longer take pilgrims around the
world, with these crucifixes she is now
able to bring these holy places to the pil-
grims instead. It is an
amazing witness when
almost daily she hears
from someone who has
experienced some kind
of spiritual, emotional
or even physical “heal-
ing” that they attribute
to receiving one of these
crucifixes.
One of my favorite
gospel songs is “He
Touched Me,” composed by legendary
Gospel musician, Bill Gaither in 1963.
Gaither wrote the song late one night,
inspired by playing a revival with guest
speaker Dr. Dale Oldham, in which he
spoke of the healing touch of Jesus as
referenced in this week’s Gospel. Gaither
had this to say when asked about song-
writing: Often they have the idea that
we sit down at the piano a certain time
each week and stay there until we have
produced a song. This is far from what
happens. He goes on to say…. Songs are
more like whispered answers to the ques-
tions of the heart, or manna provided to
supply need. We seem to have very little
to do with how often or at what time
a song is written. When it is there, we
simply stop everything and record it on
paper.... [I]f it is ignored, it slips away
like a vapor and is never recalled.
Whether it is a blessed crucifix, a
beautiful Gospel song, or a kind and
compassionate heart, as Christians we
are the conduit—the healing touch of
Christ in today’s world. And so it goes…
Something happened and now I know He
touched me and made me whole

Music Notes
Join our new Chime Choir
Do you love music? Consider joining our
new “Chime Choir” at The Madeleine.
Hand chimes are…
Accessible to play. Chimes are set up like
a musical keyboard. A basic knowledge
in musical rhythm or note reading is help-
ful, but not required.
A safe alternative to singing during
COVID. “Chimers” are assigned one
or two individual chimes, which are not
shared with one another. Because of this,
it is easy to be socially distanced. Masks
are mandatory.
A great family music ministry —which
will bring much joy and beauty to our
liturgies!

Donald Kayser
A Funeral Mass was celebrated for Donald Kayser on
Saturday, June 26, at The Madeleine.
Don’s life began on the south side of Chicago, the son of
Catherine Spillane and Harold, whose families immigrated from
Ireland and Germany. With only a ninth grade education, Don’s
father worked his way up the ranks of GE as an electrician so
he could provide that opportunity for his two boys, Don and
Bill. Demonstrating a strong inclination for math and engineer-
ing, Don earned a spot in the prestigious Fournier Institute, a
school that accepted high school students their junior year and
bestowed a BS in Electrical Engineering after a six year program.
He earned an MBA with distinction from Harvard, paid for by
the GI Bill. When graduation came he spurned the lucrative op-
portunities in large companies and accepted an offer to work
for a lumber company in the small town of Crossett, Arkansas
but only, as he explained later, if his sweetheart Mary Collette
would accompany him there as his wife. They were married in
1956 and started a family three years later.
In his career, Don had many great accomplishments, serv-
ing as Chief Financial Officer of several companies, including
Morrison Knudsen, and retiring as the CEO of Louisiana Pacific
Corporation in Portland, Oregon, in 1996. In work he was steady,
determined and thorough, a man people loved to work for who
brought out the best in those around
him. His motto, repeated throughout
his life, was “there’s no limit to the
amount of good one person can do if
that person is not concerned with who
takes the credit.” He managed with
humility, treating those who worked
for him with dignity and respect. He
preferred to stay out of the spotlight,
focus on the objective, put in place the
best people to do the job, step aside
and let them function on their own.
It was a formula that enabled his many accomplishments, from
managing a billion dollar pension fund and structuring complex
corporate mergers to helping companies through potentially crip-
pling financial and legal crises.
Still, beneath the serious and deliberate demeanor, there was
a warm, loving husband whose ideal evening was a dry martini
followed by quiet dinner with Mary, a proud father who in his
final words to his children expressed his greatest achievement
in life, raising six happy and successful children whom he loved
dearly and, in turn, loved him as much as any children could
ever love a father.
Please pray for Donald, his family and all the faithfully departed from The Madeleine
